  Responsibilities:  
     
     
 

Initiate and lead a number of characterisation and measurement projects as required to support the development activities of the businesses. Also, to contribute to the development of the capabilities in Materials Science with a particular focus on Materials Physics.To lead and carry out applied research projects to meet the needs of the Development groups in the businesses for new product development and to develop the overall capability of the applied research
Make a significant contribution to solving the most challenging technical problems and the delivery of complex applied research and/or business critical innovation projects
Play a leading role in business-led innovation projects to ensure that the contributes to their successful delivery
Contribute to the development of the applied research capability of the, and in particular, to take a role in the professional development of members of his/her team
Lead the initiation and maintenance of links with key academic or other sources of the science base in China (and Asia), which underpin and develop own research activities through collaboration and/or joint project work.
Maintain links with appropriate local/regional Business applications development groups to support them in the development of new products
Ensure that all activities in their area of responsibility are conducted within the SHE policy of the and to contribute to the development of the overall policy.

 
     
     
  Requirements:  
     
     
 

The jobholder will have had academic training in Materials Science beyond first degree level and hold either a Masters Degree or PHD.
He/she will be an established R&D professional with a track record demonstrating:
Personal knowledge of and contribution to Materials Science
The delivery of beneficial new product innovations to businesses in the coatings, adhesives or specialty polymers areas.
This is likely to have been achieved over a period of 10 years since obtaining a first degree and will include more than 5 years relevant applied research or new product development experience.
He/she will have had previous experience of working on research projects in teams in academia or an industrial applied research organisation and will have been directly accountable for both his/her own projects and for elements of larger cross-functional ones.
He/she will also need to develop effective working relationships with other scientists in across the world and will be able to demonstrate previous experience of international networking and collaboration.
